Tunga Dam has become the first major reservoir in Karnataka to reach its full storage level this monsoon following continuous heavy rainfall in the Tunga catchment area. Tunga Dam has brought welcome relief to farmers as abundant inflows have rapidly filled the reservoir.The reservoir near Gajanur in Shivamogga district has reached its maximum water level of 588.24 metres, prompting authorities to open 9 crest gates to regulate the inflow. Around 13,558 cusecs of water are being released into the river as part of reservoir management.Officials stated that the reservoir is currently storing around 3.24 TMC of water, marking a significant milestone in this year's monsoon season. The steady rainfall across the catchment has ensured healthy inflows, benefiting irrigation, drinking water supply, and downstream river systems.Tunga Dam is expected to play a vital role in supporting agriculture during the kharif season.
