The harder you work, the luckier you get! Our success story is deeply entwined with that of AMWAY™ Malaysia! Our decision to build our AMWAY business in July 1976 was a defining moment and a turning point in our lives! Before AMWAY, we were both professionals: Angela was a graduate teacher who taught Form 6, and I was a dental surgeon in private practice. We both graduated from England; Angela with an honors degree from Bristol University and I, with a dental degree from Guy’s Hospital, University of London. We returned to Malaysia after our graduation, got married, had 3 children and were well settled in the mainstream of professional life in Kuala Lumpur. As the years passed and we reached middle age, economic and professional work pressures began to bear down heavily on us. With no possibility of expanding our income, we felt trapped in a 9-to-5 routine! We were desperately looking for a way out. We had a big dream and wanted a better life for our family and ourselves. We tried the stock market and got ‘burnt.’ Undaunted, we tried the boutique business and even took a share in a big restaurant business. We paid the price of inexperience. It was a disaster! Experience, the best teacher, was very costly in business because of the risk of unforeseen circumstances, beyond one’s control. When we first saw the AMWAY opportunity, the most appealing feature was the ‘no risk’ factor. With so many good features and benefits we certainly considered it to be a golden opportunity. People said we were ‘lucky’, but we spell luck as W-O-R-K, that is, Work with a Passion which, becomes a Labour of Love. Therefore, the harder you work, the luckier you get! We had our fair share of jibes and disparaging remarks thrown at us by uninformed people, but this only strengthened our resolve to succeed. We were not going to allow anyone to ‘steal our dream’! We’ve learnt to handle challenges, turn our ‘scars into stars’, and have also taken the time to smell the roses along the way.
