The Battle of Hansan, Japan's Operation to Eliminate Yi Sun-sin! Wakizaka Yasuharu was one of Toyotomi Hideyoshi's closest confidants, the Seven Spears, who played a significant role in unifying the country. During the early stages of the Imjin War, he achieved a remarkable feat, defeating 100,000 Joseon troops with just 2,000 men at Yongin. After his brilliant performance in the Battle of Yongin, Wakizaka received Hideyoshi's order: "Eliminate Yi Sun-sin!" Wakizaka led a fleet of 73 ships toward Hansan Island. The Battle of Hansan, the First Head-to-Head Battle of Joseon and Japan's Elite Naval Forces The Battle of Hansan marked the first head-to-head confrontation between the elite navies of Joseon and Japan at sea. The Japanese, already strong in close combat with musketry at their forefront, were in high spirits with the appointment of the war hero Wakizaka as their commander. However, even the elite Japanese navy fell to Yi Sun-sin's military strategy, which scientifically and exquisitely utilized the enemy's formation, geography, and terrain. This history special recreates the Battle of Hansan, the culmination of Yi Sun-sin's military strategy, based on Admiral Yi's report and the Wakizaka Record. The Battle of Hansan, Deciding the Seven Years of War As a result of the Battle of Hansan, Wakizaka's fleet was virtually annihilated. Toyotomi Hideyoshi, judging that victory at sea was impossible, issued a ban on naval battles. Defeat at sea was fatal for the Japanese army, as it cut off their supply lines. Japan later recorded in its "Modern Japanese National History" that "this defeat left the Japanese army paralyzed, and the conquest of Joseon was declared doomed." The spoils of war(?) Japan gained from defeat... the Crane Wing Formation Admiral Togo's Jeongja strategy, which led to victory in the Russo-Japanese War. Japanese academics claim that this strategy was learned from Admiral Yi Sun-sin's strategy at the Battle of Hansan.
