Unbeknownst to us, the empire of big, evil drugstores (DM, Rossmann) offers a special service: If you buy a ridiculously expensive (€20 - 40-70 sqm) cleaning fluid there, you can borrow the matching carpet and upholstery spray-vacuum cleaning machine for free (€5/day for 3 days after that - but the prices and duration at Rossmann will be similar at DM). We tried it out once, and the results are pretty good - but you should get the machine the day you want to use it. It takes about 24 hours for everything to dry again, and as long as it's wet, you can't see the results very well, so it's a shame if you return the machine and then realize you need it again. If you're interested, just ask at your local market. This option isn't available in every market, so it's recommended that you reserve the machine - but since it's hardly advertised, you'll rarely have to wait long for it.
