Private Island Airpark | Blakely Island, WA

There are more than 50 residential airparks in Washington State, and many of them are located in the San Juan Islands. All of these airparks are private, restricted use and require an invitation from a resident or permission from the airport manager to visit. In an emergency these airfields can be used to land rather than ditch in the ocean and be swept away with the tide. I fly over Blakely Island often, at least 4 or 5 times per month, and I've said to myself that's where I'd land if I was close by and had an inflight emergency. I had never seen this airfield closeup, only from a few thousand feet above, I didn't want to see it for the first time while coming down in distress while dealing with an emergency. Tonight's flight was all about having a closer look.
