The Home of the Soul (Wo Findet Die Seele Die Heimat, Die Ruh?) (accordion)

Friedrich Ludwig Jörgens was a Protestant German theologian born in 1792. He came to Canada for a brief period where in 1827 he wrote the words to "The Home of the Soul" expressing a longing to be at rest in heaven. He returned to Europe for several years before moving to the United States. He died in 1842, possibly of suicide, and is buried in Hermann, Missouri. This hymn was set to music adapted from a popular British song Sir Henry Rowley Bishop had written in 1822 as part of an opera. Here it is performed on my 3/4 Excelsior Accordiana 308 from the 1960's. O where is the home of the soul to be found? Who knows its true shelter where comforts abound? What city of refuge will offer a place That sin cannot enter, the soul to disgrace? Nowhere, nowhere do we behold On earth such a city of blessings untold. How blissful the rest in that city so fair, Where, dwelling with Jesus, the soul hath no care! The sounding of harps in those mansions above Do bid the soul welcome to heavenly love. Rest, rest, rest, rest, heavenly rest, I long to embrace thee, to be with the blest. So leave this poor earth if that home thou wouldst see, The home of the sainted from sorrow made free: Jerusalem, city resplendent in gold, Wilt thou to the soul all thy beauties unfold? Truly, truly thou art the goal, Where rest is the portion of every pure soul! Wo findet die Seele die Heimat der Ruh? Wer deckt sie mit schützenden Fittichen zu? Ach, bietet die Welt keine Freistatt mir an, Wo Sünde nicht kommen, nicht anfechten kann? Nein, nein, nein, nein, hier ist sie nicht: Die Heimat der Seelen ist droben im Licht. Verlasse die Erde, die Heimat zu sehn, Die Heimat der Seele, so herrlich, so schön, Jerusalem droben, von Golde erbaut, Ist dieses die Heimat der Seele, der Braut? (a) Ja, ja, ja, ja dieses allein Kann Ruhplatz und Heimat der Seele nur sein. Wie selig die Ruhe bei Jesu im Licht! Tod, Sünde und Schmerzen, die kennt man dort nicht.
