In the middle of WW2, urban planners in Manchester began imagining what the city could look like after the war was over. Seeing the devastation of Nazi air raids as an opportunity to redesign the city, they came up with the 'City of Manchester Plan 1945' a document that became the basis of most big planning decisions throughout the 20th century. But for the city centre the plan went from idealistic to outright bonkers.
