The Irish History of Manchester
We all know that waves of immigrants, boat people, invaders, and settlers have come to England over the years, long before there even was an England. But immigration accelerated after industrialisation, especially in places like Manchester where opportunities were numerous. The first of the great waves of 19th century immigrants to the city were the Irish. Their story begins with hardship, sickness, discrimination and hope. This year I'm collaborating with Adam and Henry from Northern Rose media on a series looking at the history of the different immigrant communities in Manchester.
