Arystokratka, która przeżyła Ravensbrück. Polka z wyboru. Ostatnia z rodu. Karolina Lanckorońska
Karolina Lanckorońska was one of those figures whose biography defies simple categories. Born into the world of European aristocracy, raised among languages, cultures, and vast art collections, she chose her own Polish identity and remained faithful to it until the end of her life. She was an art historian, an expert on the work of Michelangelo, and one of the first women to receive a habilitation at the Jan Kazimierz University in Lviv. During the war, she was active in the underground resistance, helping prisoners, and working for the Central Welfare Council. She was arrested, imprisoned, and sent to Ravensbrück, where even in the camp she lectured on art from memory to fellow prisoners. She was one of the people who brought the truth to the world about the murder of the Lviv professors. After the war, she did not return to communist Poland but devoted her entire life to Polish science and culture. She supported researchers, funded scholarships, financed scientific institutions, and donated priceless works of art to Poland, including Rembrandt paintings from her family collection. In this episode of @NietylkoePodcast, we talk about pride, discipline, loneliness, patriotism, wartime courage, and what a consciously chosen homeland can be. In this episode, we discuss: – who Karolina Lanckorońska was, – why she was called a Pole by choice, – how she ended up in Ravensbrück, – what she knew about the murder of the Lviv professors, – what her activities were like after the war, – why she donated priceless works of art to Poland, – what the inscription on her grave meant: Gentis suae Polonae ultima. 🩵 If you appreciate conversations about history, culture, and unconventional biographies, subscribe to the channel and leave a comment.
