What’s the I‘rab of La Ilaha Illa Allah?

In this short Arabic grammar lesson, I explain the i‘rab of: لا إله إلا الله This is not really the kind of i‘rab beginners need to worry about, because the sentence is short and the basic meaning is already clear. But for students who want the technical analysis, this lesson walks through how إلا normally works, how غير can sometimes be used for exception, and how إلا can also come in the meaning of غير. Then we apply that directly to لا إله إلا الله and explain why the translation is: There is no entity rightfully worshipped other than Allah. Important clarification: After publishing this video, I looked further into the issue and I now think the final application to لا إله إلا الله needs correction. The principle explained in the video is still valuable: إلا can sometimes come in the meaning of غير, and that does matter in Arabic. But I no longer think that is the strongest analysis of لا إله إلا الله itself. I now think the stronger analysis is that the khabar of لا is omitted, and I’ll publish a correction video on this insha Allah.
