"(Wish I Could Fly Like) Superman" was a disco-infused hit from The Kinks' 1979 album, Low Budget. Despite Ray Davies' hatred of disco, the band found moderate success with the song in North America. Inspired by watching Superman: The Movie starring Christopher Reeve, Marlon Brando, and Gene Hackman, Ray Davies crafted the lyrics jokingly in response to a request for a more club-friendly record from Clive Davis, Arista Records founder. Davies said of this: "It was kind of a joke, taking the piss out of Clive [Davis] wanting us to do a club-friendly record."
