In the 13th century, they built an almost rectangular circular wall with a residential tower – the predecessor of today's keep. A moat wall was probably added in front of the circular wall and the keep was built in the middle of the 13th century. Access to the 33-meter-high structure was at a height of 8 meters and was only accessible via ladders. At that time, the keep could have been used both as an observation and watchtower, as well as a last refuge in the event of a siege. However, this was probably never the case. At the end of the 14th century, the fourth floor of the palace – until then still a half-timbered structure – was replaced by a solid structure. Around 1410, the keep was extended, and the tower room was built. After the conflicts between the Wettins and the von Schladebachs escalated, the latter left the castle by 1317 at the latest. They were succeeded by the burgraves of Leisnig. In 1409, the von Einsiedel family was documented for the first time at Gnandstein Castle. One of the first was Hildebrand I von Einsiedel.
