From Wednesday (May 27) to Thursday (May 28, 2026), the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) launched a massive escalation of airstrikes, hitting hundreds of strategic points and killing dozens of civilians. The IDF claimed to have bombed approximately 550 targets identified as Hezbollah command centers and military infrastructure in South and East Lebanon. Dozens of civilians were reportedly killed, including at least 10 people in Burj al-Shamali and two in the city of Deir Aames. Tel Aviv stated that the attacks were preceded by evacuation warnings for local residents. The deadliest attacks centered on the Tyre district, targeting densely populated areas such as Burj Al-Shamali and the city of Deir Aames. The situation on the ground was reportedly extremely chaotic as the attacks coincided with a religious holiday, when civilians were at their peak. Video footage widely circulated on social media clearly shows the devastating impact of the airstrikes: Several concrete buildings were destroyed, leaving behind blazing flames. Civilian vehicles were burned to the ground on the side of the road. Thick, black smoke billowed from the sky, blanketing the main roads in southern Lebanon, which were now littered with rubble.
