In this video, we recount one of the most astonishing, controversial, and pivotal campaigns in history: the conquest of Tenochtitlan and the fall of the Mexica (Aztec) Empire at the hands of Hernán Cortés and a handful of Castilian conquistadors. A story that blends indigenous alliances, military strategy, religion, betrayal… and a great deal of opportunism. In 1519, Cortés landed on the Gulf Coast of Mexico and founded Villa Rica de la Vera Cruz, disobeying direct orders from the governor of Cuba. From there, he began his march toward the heart of the Aztec empire, forging alliances with peoples subjugated by the Mexica, such as the Tlaxcalans, and using the key figure of Malintzin (Malinche) as interpreter and negotiator. After a tense encounter with Moctezuma II, the Spanish entered Tenochtitlan, the Mexica capital built on the lake. What followed was a dangerous game of diplomacy, kidnappings, and violence. The situation erupted in the Massacre of the Great Temple and the bloody retreat of the Spanish during the Night of Sorrows (1520). But Cortés returned a year later with indigenous reinforcements and laid siege to the city. On August 13, 1521, after months of famine, war, and epidemics, Tenochtitlan fell. With it, the Aztec Empire.
