I usually classify paints into two types: thinner paints like PPG, Maxmeyer, Autocolor, Sinnek, Sikkens, and thicker paints like Sprint, Glasurit, Standox, Cromax, and more. Thinner paints are more liquid and don't require a high product load to uniform the metal. This type of paint is usually quick to apply, leaving the thin paint without a high micron rating. If we overload the paint, the metals will not be able to be applied due to the excess silver or pearlescent coating, leaving spots and streaks in the color. On the other hand, thicker paints must be coated for proper metal application. The thicker the silver or pearlescent coating, the more coated it should be. This type of system achieves a higher micron rating in each coat, covering most colors in a single coat. As you can see, due to the different systems available on the market, we cannot provide a regulation that can always be used with all paint systems. We need to adjust the spray gun's parameters until we see that the paint, whether thin or thick, leaves a uniform finish when applied. Thin paints require a lower product load to uniform the metals than thick-application paint systems. In addition to the different paint systems on the market, there are also different types of airbrush guns, some with a higher product load than others. I'll give you an example of the Devilbiss DV1 and how I use it depending on the type of paint I'm using. For thin paints, I apply a full fan, 1.5 turns of product, and a pressure of 1.6 bar; for the correction coat, I apply a full fan, 1 turn of product, and a pressure of 1.1 bar. For thick paints, I apply a full fan, 2 turns of product, and a pressure of 1.8 bar with the Devilbiss DV1; and for the correction coat, I apply a full fan, 1.5 turns of product, and a pressure of 1.3 bar. As you can see, the product and pressure settings for one system are completely different. When you're applying the paint and see that it's even, you've found the perfect settings for your brand of paint with the spray gun you're using. Even if we've achieved a perfect paint finish, we can also create shadows and spots when applying the varnish. When applying the varnish, we have to be careful not to hold the spray gun too close to the paint, as this will shift the metals or pearls, creating stripes or shading. The first coat of varnish is the most sensitive to this effect, as it will be in direct contact with the paint layer. I recommend applying the varnish from a safe distance and at the pressure recommended by your manufacturer. After the first coat of varnish, we can apply more pressure with the second coat, as we won't be applying it directly onto the paint but rather onto the first coat of varnish we applied, making it more difficult for the silver or pearls in the paint to move.
