Course 5 of 396 – Takapau Golf Club ⛳️🌿 The journey continues! This time, we made our way to Takapau Golf Club, located in the Manawatu-Whanganui region of New Zealand’s North Island. Just 45 minutes from Napier, the course sits right off State Highway 2 and is full of charm and character. Established way back in 1898, Takapau is a 12-hole layout with multiple playing combinations. You won’t find numbered holes here — instead, each one is named, with several paying tribute to World War I battlegrounds, giving the course a unique historical feel. A big shoutout to the volunteer crew who keep this place running. We had the chance to chat with Errol Johnhansen, a true legend who’s dedicated to keeping the course alive. With a small team of locals, Errol helps maintain the course to an impressive standard despite limited resources — absolute heroes of grassroots golf. The highlight? “The Styx” — a standout par 3 from an elevated tee, firing over a winding creek to a tight green surrounded by towering trees. It’s got real character. We even heard Seve Ballesteros once played this hole... we can’t confirm it, but we’re choosing to believe the legend. We played a Stableford round on the outer 9 — Nick getting 3 shots a hole, Stephen with 13, and Sean playing off +2. As always, we pushed daylight, but just managed to finish before the sun dipped. This place really reminded us why we love doing this. Courses like Takapau make golf accessible and welcoming. With cheap green fees and a relaxed, quiet atmosphere, it’s perfect for anyone learning the game — or just wanting to enjoy a peaceful round in a beautiful setting.
