The war will end—and then what it's currently suppressing will explode. Analyst Yuriy Romanenko and philosopher Sergei Datsyuk examine what kind of Ukraine will emerge from this war. This broadcast is a continuation of the debate about the limits of survival strategies. In this segment, the interlocutors look beyond the frontline: what will happen to the country after the war, will it remain united or divided, and what project will replace the one with which Ukraine entered this war. Romanenko assumes that the war is moving toward an end—possibly as early as this fall, because both Russia and Ukraine face the threat of a harsh winter, and both sides are interested in an exit. He considers strikes on Crimea and border areas part of this exit—a means of creating a negotiating advantage that Ukraine is eager to realize. Datsyuk looks beyond the ceasefire. His thesis: the 1991 project of an independent Ukraine and the formula "Army, Language, Faith" have exhausted themselves. The old constitution, he says, is no longer working – too many unconstitutional decisions were made during the war, and to restore it would require repealing dozens of laws. He sees the solution not in repairing it, but in creating a new tradition, a new statehood, and a new constitution. The interlocutors explain the origins of this impasse through history. Ukraine chose neither the Polish nor the Belarusian paths – it was held back by the clash of two authoritarian regimes within the country, namely, Donetsk and Galician. Their struggle, according to Datsyuk, tore apart the "second republic" and was one of the reasons why the country entered the war in its current form. A separate, acute problem is the split within the elites and the threat of internal conflict. Datsyuk insists that the elite is heterogeneous, divided, and will fight among itself, drawing on different social groups, and it is in this struggle that a new state of society will crystallize. Civil war can be avoided, but there are no guarantees – for now, it is only held back by the fact that the war is external. Romanenko counters with the pragmatics of communication: he points out that his media outlet reaches around 80 million people per month, more than a telethon, and that the winners are not those who ban what's not theirs, but those who constantly expand their influence through trusting, non-dominant communication, drawing "the other Ukraine" into the conversation. Behind the individual stories lies the overarching question of the entire broadcast: how will Ukraine end the war—as a state, as a nation, as a civil society, or as a country that has managed to transform itself and gain agency. This segment is about how the old answer no longer works, and a new one has yet to be written.
