Part 1: Introduction to the Maritime History of Southeast Asia
Southeast Asia has long occupied a central position in global maritime history due to its strategic geographical location, extensive coastlines, and dense network of islands, straits, and navigable waterways. For millennia, the region has functioned as a crossroads connecting the civilizations of East Asia, South Asia, the Middle East, and, later, Europe. Maritime activities shaped political institutions, economic systems, cultural exchanges, technological innovations, and social identities across the region. This chapter introduces the maritime history of Southeast Asia by examining its geographical foundations, maritime civilizations, trade networks, shipbuilding traditions, and historiographical challenges. It also discusses the methodological approaches employed in maritime historical studies and highlights the significance of maritime perspectives in understanding the broader history of Southeast Asia.
