In the first years of independence, Polish military personnel did not belong to any privileged caste. A change only came with Józef Piłsudski's seizure of power after the May Coup in 1926. From then on, the state's policy regarding the salaries of professional soldiers changed fundamentally – it was recognized that they should earn a good salary so that, as representatives of the Republic, they could live at a decent standard of living. Indeed, thanks to good, even very good, salaries, the financial status of military personnel improved significantly in the late 1920s, and by the 1930s, it was already at a high level.
