१७,मे १७८२ ला मध्य प्रदेशातील सालबाई गावी एक तह झाला. या तहाने पहिले इंग्रज मराठा युद्ध समाप्त झाले. उत्तर हिंदुस्थानात या वेळेला मराठ्यांची सत्ता अगदी कमकुवत झालेली, त्याचं कारण देखील ८ वर्ष सुरू असलेले पहिले इंग्रज मराठा युद्ध. गेलेली सत्ता परत मिळविण्यासाठी सरदार महादजी शिंदेंनी ठरवले दिल्लीची मोहिम करायची. कोणतीही मोहिम करायची झाल्यास पहिल्यांदा पाया भक्कम करणे आलेच. त्याच प्रमाणे सरदार महादजी शिंदेंनी ग्वालियर आणि गोहदच्या किल्ल्यांना वेढा दिला. २ वर्ष मेहनतकरून अखेर महादजींने ही दोन्ही स्थळे जिंकली. इतक्यात ग्वालियरला दिल्लीहून पेशव्यांचे वकील हिंगणे महादजींची भेट घेण्यासाठी आले, त्यांच्या सोबत बादशाहा शाहाआलम यांचे पत्र होतेच. पाठोपाठ महादजींना भेटायला मुघल बादशहा शाहाआलम स्वता येणार अशी बातमी आली. फत्तेपूरसिक्रीला आग्राजवळ सरदार महादजी शिंदेंची आणि बादशाहा शाहाआलम दुसरे यांची भेट झाली. वकिल-ए-मुतलक हे पद मराठ्यांना मिळाले. काय होते वकिल-ए-मुतलक पद ? कशी जिंकली पाटीलबाबा महादजी शिंदेंनी दिल्ली? जाणून घ्या या Episode मधून. 17th May 1782, in Saibai Village located in present day Madhya Pradesh, an event took place which changed the history of India. Important event was, treaty of salbai signed between the Peshwa and British East India Company with Mahadji Scindia acting as Mediator. This treaty ended the First Anglo Maratha War. During the years 1773 to 1782, the Marathas were absent from North Indian politics as they were busy fighting the British. As soon as the Treaty of Salbai was signed, Sardar Mahadji Scindia became free to look into the affairs of Mughal Empire. Inorder to conquer Delhi and take part in Mughal Politics it was important to conquer Gwalior and Central India first. Hence, Mahadji Scindia laid siege to the forts of Gwalior and Gohad. On 23rd July 1783, Gwalior Fort was conquered by Mahadji Scindia. Soon after few months Gohad was captured, bringing whole Central India under Maratha Control. On one fine day Hingne the Maratha Resident at Mughal Court came to meet Mahadji Scindia. He conveyed the message of his master, Emperor Shah Alam II and requested on his behalf that Mahadji Scindia must come to rescue the Mughal Power. Emperor Shah Alam II himself came to meet Mahadji Scindia in the year 1784. Both these leaders meet at Fattepursikri and Mahadji was given the post of Vakil-i-Mutlak the highest and supreme post in the Mughal Empire after the Emperor. From this day started the rule of Marathas over Delhi till they were obstructed by Gulam Qadir the chief of Rohillas. How did Mahadji Scindia conquer Delhi? How he defeated his enemies?
