É sede da diocese de Lamego (a única diocese portuguesa que não corresponde a uma capital de distrito), possui muitos monumentos religiosos, dos quais se destacam a Sé Catedral, e o Santuário de Nossa Senhora dos Remédios Lamego teve uma comunidade judaica que aí se fixou no século XV que construíram uma sinagoga junto às Portas do Sol no atual bairro do Castelo.
