Betona Yazılan Hafıza: Leyla Emadi ile Malzeme, Dil ve Kimlik Üzerine

Memory Written in Concrete: Leyla Emadi on Material, Language, and Identity I was born in Ankara in 1977, originally from Iran. It was during the most turbulent periods for both countries, both politically and ideologically. On one hand, the forced consequences – and perhaps the downsides – of regime change; on the other, military coups and years of oppression. Both environments witnessed years of turmoil and unending chaos. Being caught between these two countries, which experienced roughly the same periods, and being subjected to oppression and ideological differences, formed the basis of my art. On the other hand, the richness brought by being a citizen of two countries, and the search for identity that sometimes permeates the soul, has manifested itself extensively in my work. In my work, I have strived to address the gender inequality, the concept of justice (or injustice), and ideological and entrenched thought structures underlying our societal wounds, using different mediums. In recent years, I have blended my works, which are based on the concept of trauma, with concrete and typography, addressing both our societal and individual sensitivities. Since we express ourselves, our stance, our worldview, and our communication with others through 'language,' words, phrases, and expressions are important building blocks that make us who we are. Therefore, combining the overwhelming dominance of language with typography and concrete, a hard material, has allowed me to present my message directly and powerfully.
