Asparagus is a long-lasting crop; a single bed can produce for 10-15 years. It's not difficult to grow, but it can be very rewarding for those who know how to care for it properly. The simplest cultivation method is using the "legs," which are the plant's rhizomes. The legs can be harvested from existing plants, but they are also available for sale at nurseries and agricultural consortia. Each leg will produce a plant identical to the one harvested, maintaining the exact genetic makeup. Asparagus legs are planted directly in the garden in winter, when they are fully dormant. Transplanting is postponed until March in areas with cold winters. If you want to follow the lunar phase, plant them during the waning moon, which helps the legs take root. Asparagus legs require loose, well-draining, and nutrient-rich soil. If the soil doesn't drain, it's best to grow on raised beds. Tilling involves working the soil to a depth of 30-40 cm, then digging a planting furrow, or hole, about 25 cm deep. At the base of this hole or furrow, place fertilizer (well-rotted manure mixed with the soil in equal proportions). Ideally, use cow or sheep manure, 1 kg per asparagus plant. Then, add a light layer of soil and level the soil; the foot should be about 10-15 cm deep. Before placing the foot in the furrow, remove any damaged parts using pruning shears.
