On July 4, the Surkhay Tower fell. This significantly worsened the situation for the besieged. But Imam's warriors did not surrender until August 22. It was on this day that imperial banners flew over both Akhulgos. The 80-day Akhulgo saga was over. Casualties on both sides were numerous. Women and children threw stones or daggers at bayonets or, in despair, plunged into the abyss to certain death. Mothers killed their children rather than let them be captured by the soldiers. About twenty men managed to escape from Akhulgo, led by Shamil, who was wounded. Shamil's wife and infant son were killed during the assault, and his sister committed suicide by throwing herself into the gorge. The news of Akhulgo's fall temporarily shook the highlanders' confidence in Shamil's victory. The village of Akhulgo was captured and destroyed. It was never rebuilt. A few days later, the Russian army abandoned Akhulgo. Shamil continued his resistance for almost 20 more years. On this day, the Majlis was dedicated to this day, bringing together so many people, united in their hearts, filled with love for the Imam and all those who fell as martyrs in the land of Akhulgo. No one will ever know the inner state of the Imam and his murids; only reason can assess the death of his wife, son, and sister, and hundreds of worthy sons who, with dignity, gave everything, preserved our faith for us. Complete reliance on the Almighty testifies to their character and the resistance they put up under complete siege. O Allah, do not deprive us of the Ummah of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). To all those who were fortunate enough to participate in this Majlis, which was attended by hundreds and hundreds of thousands of people, may the shafa'ah of our righteous Imam and the participants in this pure and vibrant ghazawat in the land of Dagestan and the Caucasus be washed away.
