The video has not survived the ‘Tonight Show’ archives & more than likely was destroyed unless someone found a way to video tape it off their TV set on this particular night (ala Lennon & McCartneys’ 68 ‘Tonight Show’ appearance). As it stands, all that remains is this audio. Flip Wilson was the guest host & Hendrix’s amp blows out during “Lover Man” until sound is regained & he runs through the song again with Billy Cox on bass & the Johnny Carson’s ‘Tonight Show’ drummer Ed Shaughnessy accompanying. Some biographers mistakingly claim Hendrix dedicating “Lover Man” to recently deceased Rolling Stones member Brian Jones, one of Hendrix’s closest friends. No mention of Brian Jones name is mentioned in the audio.
