A Sapphic Couple at the Center of the Story | Whistle (2026)
Lesbian and women-loving-women movie fans, Whistle is a new film with a sapphic couple at the center of the story — and yes, they actually matter. If you’ve been looking for a lesbian / sapphic storyline in a new movie where the girls are not side characters, Whistle might be exactly what you want. There is something very satisfying about finding softness in a story that should have none, and that is exactly what surprised me about this film. Whistle is not a romance. Not even close. It is a supernatural horror film about a group of teenagers who come across an ancient whistle, and the moment they blow it, their deaths start hunting them down. But somehow, right in the middle of all that chaos, it also gives us Chrys and Ellie — and that sapphic storyline ended up being the thing I cared about most. Chrys is the guarded new girl, the one the film follows most closely after she inherits Mason’s locker and finds the whistle. Ellie, on the other hand, is softer, more emotionally open, and one of the few people who really seems to see Chrys from the very beginning. What makes their dynamic work is the contrast. Chrys feels heavier, darker, harder to reach — while Ellie is the one who moves toward her. And in a film where everything is bloody, messy, and constantly falling apart, that emotional thread gives the story something much more human. One thing I also liked is that Ellie is not just there as Chrys’s love interest. She has her own presence in the story, her own role in the chaos, and by the end, their connection becomes one of the most memorable parts of the film. And yes — because I know this is something you guys always ask me in the comments — our girls do get a happy ending. In a genre like this, where almost no one survives and lesbians have so often been reduced to side plots or tragic endings, that alone makes this worth watching. Sophie Nélisse, who many of you will know as teen Shauna from Yellowjackets, also pulled me into this film. It was really nice seeing her here, and honestly, I want to see much more of her on the big screen. 📺 Film: Whistle (2025), Currently available to rent or buy on video on demand.
