Blue sugarcane fields stretch endlessly across the horizon. This is the site where sugarcane, the raw material for ethanol—known as "gasoline from the field"—is being harvested. Although oil prices in Brazil have risen sharply following the crisis in Iran, the country is defending fuel costs by using sugarcane ethanol. In Brazil, so-called "flex" vehicles—which can be refueled by mixing gasoline and ethanol without any issues—are the dominant trend. In fact, as of the first week of June, the price of ethanol is only about 65% of that of gasoline. It is a structure where the market absorbs the shock on its own, as consumers immediately switch to ethanol when international oil prices skyrocket. This unique system was born after enduring severe trials in the past. During the first oil shock in 1973, the Brazilian government declared, "We may not have oil, but we have sugarcane," and launched the "National Ethanol Program" in 1975, focusing on the development of alternative energy. Located 650km from São Paulo, this plant is a massive energy fortress built on 50 years of unwavering dedication.
