Operation Varsity: The Beginning of the End With Rivenhall Chris Part of our Gliders and Troop Carrier series • Gliders and Troop Carriers Also part of our Transport and logistics series • Transport, Logistics and War Finance Also part of our Airborne series • Airborne Forces Part of our 1945 series • 1945 In honour of Operation Varsity we look at one of the bases the aircraft departed from. There is an 80th anniversary event taking place in March 2025 https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?... RAF Rivenhall began as a USAAF base where P51’s operated from late Jan ‘44 until B26 Marauders replaced them. The RAF moved to the base 10 days after Market Garden ended, and 295 and 570 Squadrons flying Mk IV Stirlings and A Squadron Glider Pilot Regiment moved in. In today's show we will look at the RAF and GPR operations flown from the base. Mainly SOE resupply drops, but some Agent drops were carried out into the Netherlands, Belgium and Norway. All 3 units played a big part in Op VARSITY - 6 Airborne Division HQ along with elements from 1 RUR and 12 Devons flew in gliders from Rivenhall.
