Davy Jones Before Pirates of the Caribbean | Documentary for Sleep
Long before he had tentacles, he had a function. He was the keeper of the drowned, older than his own name, older than the page that first wrote it down, older than any of the five candidates the lexicographers have offered for who he was. This is a long, quiet documentary on the history of Davy Jones: where the figure came from, who gave him a body, how five centuries of English sailors used his name before Disney built a new one on top of it, and what the locker actually was in the mouths of working sailors, before it became a film. The episode moves in twelve sections across roughly four centuries of print. From the Norse sea-goddess Ran and the Cornish Bucca to the first attested English printing of the phrase in 1726, attributed to Daniel Defoe's circle. Then Tobias Smollett's 1751 full-body description: saucer eyes, three rows of teeth, horns and tail, blue smoke from the nostrils, perched in the rigging on the eve of the storm. Then five competing origin theories that two centuries of folk-etymologists have offered without settling. Melville using the name as a coordinate in 1851. Stevenson as oath in 1883. Barrie as a nursery plank-song in 1911. And the Disney/ILM redesign of 2006: forty-six individually simulated tentacles, a Scottish accent borrowed from a Glasgow sitcom, a pipe organ scored by Hans Zimmer. The conclusion that follows: Disney did not adapt the folk figure. Disney invented a new one. Then the new one swallowed the old one. The episode closes in the reading section. Thirteen verbatim primary-source passages, between 1726 and 1911, read aloud at full pace: sailor threat, sailor superstition, Royal Navy definition, a man overboard in the South Atlantic, two coastal headstones, an elegy Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote at twenty-one. The voices belong to the figure before he had a face anyone would recognise. Settle in. The narration is slow, the music is low, and there is no hurry in any of it. If you fall asleep in the middle, that is what the middle is for. Each episode is researched from primary sources, written from scratch, and read by a real narrator. They are meant to be listened to with the lights off. If you found this useful for sleep, you may enjoy the rest of the channel. There are other quiet documentaries on the folklore and history of the sea, with a new one every week or two. A slow craft for a long night. Sleep well.
