Neck Mass Due to Branchial Cleft Cyst

Branchial cleft cysts are congenital neck masses that develop in the side of the neck due to a developmental error of the branchial cleft. Branchial clefts are normal embryonic structures that should be absent once a fetus has fully developed. If persistent, they usually appear during childhood, but can also present well into adulthood, typically with an upper respiratory infection. These cysts typically occur somewhere along the anterior border of the sternocleidomastoid muscle, between the ear and collarbone, in close association with the carotid artery. They can be classified into 4 different types as shown in this video.
