Of the 28 students who graduated from the school in July, 11 were assigned to seven fishing villages as "Haenyeo Internships." With the declining number of haenyeo and their aging population, the need to preserve and inherit the Jeju haenyeo tradition is growing. Graduates who completed approximately two months of intensive training at the Beophwan Haenyeo School have been assigned to various fishing communities. They will serve as "haenyeo interns," a qualification for associate members of the fishing community, and after approximately six months of training, they will undergo a rigorous screening process to become full members. From interns who drank more seawater than rice during diving training to those who encountered difficulties upon entering the water after being tossed around by strong waves, the first steps of their challenging haenyeo training have begun. These intern haenyeo are striving to preserve the order that has protected Jeju's seas for centuries, and the community culture that sustains it. Intern Kim Eun-ju, who receives praise for her work, says, "If you just keep going, you'll be a great haenyeo!" Initially, she often faced scolding questions like, "Why are you giving up a good job to do this hard, harsh work?" The fishing community, where she longed to become a full-time haenyeo, proved unforgiving. The haenyeo, who opened their lives to mentors and nurtured successors, faced a challenging learning curve. Intern Heo Jeong-ok, who applied for the internship out of gratitude and reflection on her mother's lifelong haenyeo life, is grateful for the opportunity to dive each day and learn from the haenyeo their resilient spirit and humble approach to life. Intern Jeon So-young, who worked as a designer in the city for over a decade but returned to the countryside because she loved the Jeju sea, applied to become a haenyeo intern, hoping to make the sea her home. Even though she's exhausted from the arduous work, she boasts the instinctive desire to dive into the sea. While all haenyeo appear identical when going down to dive, their rise to the surface reveals a uniquely diverse harvest, with each layer reaching a thousand, ten thousand layers, ninety thousand layers. Jeju haenyeo are divided into three groups based on their diving ability: upper, middle, and lower. In October, when the golden season for conch harvesting is over and harvesting is permitted, upper-class haenyeo can easily haul in 60 kg of conch in three hours, while intern haenyeo can only catch 10-20 kg. The exceptionally skilled upper-class haenyeo face even more obligations. To respect the elderly haenyeo who have become lower-level officers, they are required to leave nothing in the shallow waters untouched, and even accidentally catching and selling an immature conch is considered shameful.
