And the hottest putter on the PGA Tour is still rolling. But Scottie Scheffler gave us exactly what we needed on Saturday. And Sunday just got a lot more interesting. The Wyndham Clark Situation Wyndham Clark is seven under par — the best 54-hole score ever recorded at a U.S. Open at Shinnecock. He maintained his lead on a Saturday where scoring jumped significantly, making eagle on 16 after a ridiculous second shot from 273 yards before bogeying 18. He heads into Sunday with a six-shot lead. History says this tournament should be over. Since the first Masters in 1934, there have been 13 instances of players leading a major by six or more entering the final round. Twelve won. The lone exception was Greg Norman at the 1996 Masters, who lost to Nick Faldo. And the world No. 1 chasing Wyndham Clark on Sunday? Scottie Scheffler. Clark is also trying to join rare company. If he wins, he would become just the third player ever to win U.S. Opens on both coasts, joining Billy Casper and Tiger Woods. Clark won at LACC in 2023. Shinnecock would give him the East Coast leg. Here Comes Scottie Scottie has quietly grinded all week without his usual elite iron play. Then Saturday happened. His strokes gained approach ranking by round: 103rd on Thursday, 29th on Friday, first on Saturday. He birdied three straight on the back nine, chipped in on 14, and showed more emotion than we have seen from him in weeks. Only two players broke par on Saturday: Emiliano Grillo with a 67 and Scheffler with a 69. Clark shot even par. Scottie also played himself into the final pairing, which matters. Twenty-three of the last 30 men's major champions have come from the final group. This is his first opportunity to complete the career Grand Slam. Of the six players who have done it, three accomplished it on their first try. The Rest of the Field Matt Fitzpatrick faded late. Xander Schauffele could not get under par. Collin Morikawa made a brief charge before stumbling. Sam Stevens continues to hang around. But the truth is this tournament has become Wyndham Clark, Scottie Scheffler, and the golf course. What We Need Trey put it simply: if Clark goes wire-to-wire without pressure, this becomes a Martin Kaymer-at-Pinehurst type of Sunday. Comfortable. Predictable. The U.S. Open deserves more than that. What we need is a charge. A chip-in. A huge putt. A moment where six strokes suddenly feels fragile. The course is right. And Scottie Scheffler reminded everyone on Saturday that he might be the player capable of creating that moment. Sunday at Shinnecock. Father’s Day. Six strokes. One round. One Grand Slam on the line. Watch More Golf Player Interviews: • Player Interviews Watch More Golf Expert Interviews: • Expert Interviews
