On October 1, 1949, Mao Zedong, together with his comrades who had completed the revolution, ascended the Tiananmen Square podium and proclaimed the founding of the People's Republic of China. Having cherished the ideal of communism, he longed to realize it as quickly as possible. The Great Leap Forward, a catastrophe unprecedented in world history, plunged China into a state of utter ruin over the course of five years. Without a single shot fired, the foolish policies of a foolish leader drove China toward ruin, leaving only the common people to suffer. And on May 16, 1966, the May 16 Notice, announcing the all-out Cultural Revolution in the name of the Communist Party Central Committee, was published in the People's Daily. Following the Peking University poster incident, the flames of the Cultural Revolution rapidly spread throughout the country, and students began holding critical meetings and attacking party committees at all levels. These were the Red Guards. First organized at Tsinghua University Affiliated Middle School, the Red Guards, imitating the Red Army, wore yellow uniforms and red armbands, singing the Red Guards' War Song (红卫兵战歌), and became Mao Zedong's vanguard. The Cultural Revolution has ended, but Mao Zedong's portrait still hangs in Tiananmen Square, facing the people, and is imprinted on the 100 yuan note.
