Walking The Route of The Scarborough and Whitby Railway ( Scarborough to Scalby ) April 2026
My disused railway treks take me further up the north east coast and the trackbed of the Scarborough to Whitby railway - a former 21-mile coastal passenger line connecting the two towns between 1885 and 1964 and also one of the Beeching Cuts cruellest victims. TIMESTAMPS 00:00-03:01 Ronnie's Revenge plan * 03:02-00:24. Scarborough Termini 08:25-19:17 Gallows Close site and some bridges beyond 19:18-29:48 Northstead sidings and the Story of the S&WR 29:49-36:50 Scalby 36:51 Ronnie's in trouble!* We enter at Scarborough , addressing the two different termini from which this route had launched - the still-existent Scarborough station (then Scarborough Central) and also the Londesborough Rd platform. Beyond a nearby Sainsbury's supermarket , the serious part of the journey starts. We set off through a trio of impressive bridges before opening it out into fields , formerly occupied by immense carriage sidings. Having sliced , through the somewhat more modern urban landscape to the north of the town, our route encounters the small but beautiful brick arched viaduct at Scalby . Meanwhile back at home, Pompous Ronnie *my ever put-upon housemate discovers he has an extra tool for revenge ... plus the address of a eagerly awaiting tabloid. The Scarborough and Whitby Railway route was the result of a merger between four companies in the 1850s to become known as the North Eastern Railway. Other different lines had been built amidst Scarborough, Pickering, Middlesbrough Whitby, York and Bridlington at various points since 1836, with the earliest of these being horse-operated Despite work launching in 1872, a number of financial issues slowed the construction repeatedly until the newly-structured Scarborough and Whitby Railway company succeeded in earnest with their venture opening in 1885 although under NER operation. The line, running closely along the North Yorkshire coast, operated up to twelve regular passenger trains per day almost until its demise in 1965 under the Beeching Report. The former railway operates nowadays as The Cinder Track , a popular cycling, bridleway and walking route winding through hills, cliffs and cuttings, alongside the Cleveland way, with significant former station stops along the way at Cloughton, Staintondale Ravenscar and Hawsker as well as the immensely tall Larpool Viaduct on the approach to Whitby.
