The 3-Foot Putting System Every Golfer Needs to Know ft. Joe Hallett | Golf Tips | Titleist

Everyone hates missing a 3-foot putt. PGA and LPGA players are almost perfect form this range, converting about 99% of 3-foot putts. But before you beat yourself up too badly over a missed short putt, are you sure you really know what a 3-foot putt is? As Titleist staff member Joe Hallett demonstrates with his size-13 shoe, three steps, heel-to-toe, is a lot shorter than you might think. Statistically, there's a big difference between a 3-foot putt and a 5-footer, so make sure you're judging yourself fairly. The best players in the world miss 10-15% of their 5-footers. Here's what the math says about 3-footers: the maximum break from 3 feet is around 5.6 inches. The cup is 4.25 inches wide, the ball is 1.68 inches - together that's 5.93. Which means the ball almost never needs to start outside the cup. Most golfers play too much break from here. That's the problem. The fix is simple. Stand between the ball and the hole and ask yourself one question - nothing, something, or a lot? Feel nothing, play it center. Feel something, play it to the edge. Feel a lot, just outside the cup. That system covers 98% of what you'll face from 3 feet and it works whether you're playing a weekend round or a tournament. There's also a practical tip on using the alignment line on your ball - and what to do if lining it up is making you more tense, not less.
