Vanity Fair Audiobook by WM Thackeray read by Claire Bloom
Vanity Fair (1847) By William Makepeace Thackeray. Reading performance by Claire Bloom. Vanity Fair tells the story of two friends, Amelia and Becky, making their way in the world through marriage and family during the English Victorian Era. Amelia is good but too willing to go along with things. Becky is willing to do whatever it takes to get ahead with little worry about ethics. This famous satire novel once had the revealing subtitle: A novel without heroes. The book and unabridged audiobook are very long with the audiobook being over 32 hours. This abridged version of Vanity Fair is movie length at 3+ hours. If you're unsure about listening to it, give it 10-15 minutes to determine if it's worth continuing. Enjoy! William Makepeace Thackeray (1811-1863, 52 years) was born in British occupied India. He was a novelist who sometimes wrote under pseudonyms; Yellopush, Titmarsh, and Fitz-Boodle. (I like that last one) Many of his novels and novelettes are available online and for free at Project Gutenberg and Amazon. The Book of Snobs sounds interesting. Claire Bloom (1931 - ) Is an English actress who has appeared in numerous plays, tv shows, and movies. She played the British Queen in the Oscar winning best picture movie The Kings Speech, which I recommend. It's very good and gets an average rating of 8 out of 10 stars on IMDB with 667,000 ratings. Great Books on Tape listeners may also recall that she read Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier, also on this channel. Both readings are well performed. "Vanity, Vanity, all is Vanity."
