He is a singer, multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, composer, arranger, and producer. He was born on April 21, 1958, in Bukavu, Belgian Congo (now the Democratic Republic of Congo). Lokua's father, one of the first Zairians to captain a boat on the great Congo River, was of Mongo ethnicity. His mother was a native of the mountains of Rwanda, a country renowned for the refinement of its court music. Both of them introduced him to the beauty of melodies from an early age. The Lokua family quickly moved to Kinshasa, the capital; This was an opportunity for young Pascal to attend Christian choirs and also to immerse himself in the musical atmosphere of the time, dominated by renowned artists such as Grand Kalle and Franco Luambo Makiadi. Lokua Kanza recounts: "At 13, I saw Miriam Makeba on stage, and that's when I decided to become a singer." His friend Ray Lema gave him his first guitar, and the teenager made his first public appearances in Zairian rumba orchestras. He enrolled at the Kinshasa Conservatory to further his education, where he learned music theory, composition, and harmony, and perfected his instrumental skills. In addition to the guitar, Lokua expertly played the piano, bass, percussion, and flute. His collaboration with Ray Lema and his experience gained at the conservatory allowed him to become the director of the Kinshasa National Ballet at the age of 19.
