Diss Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Located in the county of Norfolk, and around 25 miles north of Ipswich, is the town of Diss. Geographically, Diss is situated just north of the River Waveney, which defines a large part of the Norfolk-Suffolk border. The town's distinct (no pun intended) name derives from Old English 'dic', meaning ditch or embankment. At its heart is Diss Mere - a small lake believed to have been formed during the last ice age. In 1152 a market charter was granted to Diss. At the northeastern end of the town centre is St Mary's Church. First seen prominently just after the 6-minute mark, this dates primarily from the 13th and 14th centuries, and is Grade I listed. Among the town's several other historic buildings is Dolphin House just opposite St Mary's Church. This striking timber-framed building dates from the early 16th century, and was once a merchant's house - possibly of the wool trade. In 1460 John Skelton was born in Diss. Skelton became tutor and court poet to the future king Henry VIII, and was appointed rector at St Mary's Church in the early 16th century. Another poet would later become associated in the town, namely John Betjeman. Having visited Norfolk several times as a child, the town left a mark on Betjeman, who wrote the poem 'A Mind's Journey to Diss', and a documentary in the 1960s called 'Something About Diss'. In the latter he presented the town along with its architecture and warned against the threat of modernisation (which thankfully hasn't materialised, or at least not yet). In 1847 the railway arrived in Diss courtesy of the Ipswich & Bury Railway. Today, the station forms part of the Great Eastern Main Line which runs from London Liverpool Street to Norwich. Trains from London typically take around 90 minutes, while trains from Norwich take around 15 minutes. The train from Liverpool Street Station is referenced in Betjeman's aforementioned poem 'A Mind's Journey to Diss'.
