Desolate Streets of Cairo, IL Hey guys! We are in Cairo, IL and we are walking it’s desolate downtown streets. Cairo was a bustling Mississippi River/Ohio River town at one time, but now there are less than 10 buildings in the downtown center. In the 1920’s, the city boasted more than 15,000 people living in Cairo. As of 2010, the population is reported to just under 2,000 people. Cairo relied on river ferries and the shipping industry. But, as railroad shipping increased the town decreased. With no job prospects, people started to move away. Come along with us as we check out what’s left of Cairo! Parking: Plentiful. Be careful as there is glass in the streets. Worth a Visit: If you’re interested in visiting Cairo, you’d have to act fast. Again, there are less than 10 buildings and not much to see of the downtown area. Most of the downtown streets are completely bare with only street lights lining the sidewalk. It is interesting to see the floor tiles and foundations of what were beautiful buildings. Cairo, IL is located near the Kentucky and Missouri borders.
