Neonatal Hyperglycemia in the NICU: Causes, Risks, and Smart Management

Neonatal hyperglycemia is increasingly recognized as a serious complication in preterm and critically ill newborns, linked to higher mortality, intracranial hemorrhage, NEC, ROP, sepsis, and long-term neurodevelopmental problems if not managed properly. In this video, you will learn: How neonatal hyperglycemia is defined, why it is more common in very low birth weight and sick neonates, and the main causes (excessive glucose infusion, stress, drugs, and neonatal diabetes). Practical bedside approach: when to worry about high blood glucose, how to adjust glucose infusion rate, optimize TPN and lipids, and when to consider insulin therapy safely. Key prevention strategies in the NICU, including early enteral feeds, early amino acids, appropriate GIR targets, and careful monitoring during sepsis, surgery, and in VLBW infants. This video is designed for pediatric residents, neonatology fellows, NICU nurses, who want a clear, guideline-based, and practical approach to neonatal hyperglycemia management at the bedside. If you find it helpful, remember to like, subscribe, and share it with your NICU team and pediatric colleagues.
