Cello Suite No.1 Prelude – J.S.バッハ | Haruna Miyagawa|無伴奏チェロ組曲第1番より プレリュード(J.S.バッハ)宮川春菜
0:00 Seven Stories from Childhood – No.6 “Summer Story” Written by Yu Mizuki 3:24 Prelude from Cello Suite No.1 – Johann Sebastian Bach Seven Stories from Childhood – No.6 “Summer Story” by Yu Mizuki In the garden of the house where I lived as a child, there was a small pond fed by well water. The temperature of the well water remained almost constant throughout the year—cool in summer and warm in winter. During the summer, freshly picked tomatoes and watermelons from the field often floated in the pond to cool. Especially tomatoes—we ate them almost every day as snacks. Biting into a whole chilled tomato, juice running down my hands. Unlike today’s tomatoes, they were green-smelling and sour, but their concentrated flavor and refreshing coldness felt like pure luxury. At night, we slept inside a mosquito net. Perhaps it was my father’s idea to hang the mosquito net in the tatami room with the veranda doors wide open. The breeze flowed through. Of course, there was no such thing as air conditioning back then, but it was cool and comfortable. It also seems to me that summers were not as unbearably hot as they are now. I don’t recall nights staying above 30°C. Because the room was open toward the garden, not only mosquitoes but many insects flew inside. Our house was near a river and mountains, so fireflies often came as well. Exhausted from playing all day, half-asleep and dazed, I remember watching the glow of fireflies drifting beyond the net—like a memory close to a hallucination. Besides mosquitoes and fireflies, flies and moths came too. The moths would quickly disappear once the light was turned off, but flies would buzz noisily around the net for quite a while. Sometimes beetles and bell crickets flew in. One morning I woke to find a magnificent male rhinoceros beetle clinging to the net—I was delighted. Perhaps because it resembled a mist net, sparrows and thrushes sometimes became tangled in it. When a large spot-billed duck and even a cormorant flew in, that was truly surprising. Once, probably the troop’s leader, a huge Japanese macaque got caught in the net and thrashed wildly, tearing it to shreds before escaping. My father and I were furious. We tried to chase it down and punish it, but the sharp glare it shot back at us made us hesitate and stop in our tracks. In its mouth, we could see a tomato it had apparently taken from the pond.
