History and Present of Żoliborz Urzędniczy 1. Beginnings and planning (ca. 1923–1939) Żoliborz Urzędniczy is an estate in the Żoliborz district of Warsaw, located within the Miejski System Informacji area of Stary Żoliborz. The name Urzędniczy refers to the estate’s original intended residents: civil servants. The first houses were built from 1923 onwards. Architects involved included Aleksander Bojemski, Marian Kontkiewicz and Romuald Gutt. The architectural style draws from Polish small town traditions of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, with small multi unit buildings, high roofs with orange clay tiles, white facades topped by triangular gables and semicircular arches over entrances. Each building typically had a small garden behind a low wall topped with tiles and wooden gates. Street plantings of trees were part of the design. 2. War damage and reconstruction (1939–1950s) During World War II part of the colony along ul. Wyspiańskiego designed by Romuald Gutt was destroyed. After 1945 new housing was built along ul. Wyspiańskiego and around plac Henkla. This postwar colony was designed by Jacek Nowicki a pupil of Gutt and remained in the dworek style but with somewhat increased volume to meet the norms of the time. 3. Mid to late 20th century (1950s–2000) In the 1950s the nearby Osiedle Wyspiańskiego was developed in the same zone. The buildings of this estate were designed by Nowicki and Bogusław Karczewski and constructed between 1953 and 1956. These postwar structures replaced earlier war damaged buildings. Over time Żoliborz Urzędniczy remained part of the historic core of Stary Żoliborz which also includes Żoliborz Oficerski and Żoliborz Dziennikarski. 4. Revitalization and preservation (2000s–2020s) Efforts in the early 21st century in Stary Żoliborz have aimed at preserving historic architecture, renovating public spaces and reinforcing the identity of these colonies. For example Stefan Żeromski Park nearby underwent renovation between 2003 and 2005 restoring original design elements and adding playgrounds and monuments. Stary Żoliborz including Urzędniczy is considered among the more valuable residential areas in contemporary Warsaw with high demand, green surroundings and low rise architecture. 5. Today Żoliborz Urzędniczy remains a well preserved low density and green estate in Warsaw. Its distinctive small town dworek aesthetic still defines the visual character with white facades gabled roofs garden plots and tree lined streets. It is part of the MSI zone Stary Żoliborz bounded by ul. Brodzińskiego ul. Wieniawskiego and plac Henkla. Nearby the Osiedle Wyspiańskiego also sits in the same area and is often considered part of the broader Urzędniczy area. Because of its heritage preservation and location close to central Warsaw it is seen as a desirable residential area. 6. Recognition and location Żoliborz Urzędniczy is one of the historic colonies in Stary Żoliborz along with Żoliborz Oficerski and Żoliborz Dziennikarski. It is located roughly in the triangle formed by ul. Brodzińskiego ul. Wieniawskiego and plac Henkla.
