It belongs to the palm family, along with rumbia, nipah palm, areca nut, palm tree, caryote, oil palm, date palm, canary palm, and others. Sugar palms produce sap from the tapped fruit bunches. This sap can be processed into palm sugar, palm sugar, refreshing drinks, syrup, bioethanol, industrial methanol, pharmaceutical alcohol, palm wine (Tuktuak) or sopi (sour soy). Sugar palms also produce fruit, which is usually processed into palm fruit (kolang kaling) or bargat. Other products from the sugar palm tree include palm fronds, palm fiber, and sago. The sap from the trunk is of excellent quality and can be used for furniture and gazebos. The roots and leaves can be used medicinally. Farmers rarely cultivate sugar palm because wild sugar palm trees only produce fruit after 10-12 years. However, if cultivated, sugar palms can produce fruit after 8 years. Production of sugar palms is generally divided into three types: early-growing sugar palm, medium-growing sugar palm, and tall-growing sugar palm. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages, depending on whether the cultivation is homogeneous or heterogeneous. In Indonesia, traditional sugar palm plantations are found around Kotanopan, North Sumatra, and in Penyebungan, Masanrang, North Sulawesi. Sugar palms can grow well at altitudes of 3-1700 meters above sea level, ideally at 400-1500 meters above sea level. Sugar palms produce abundant water in areas with hot days and cool nights. Sugar palms can grow in highlands and swampy lowlands, but they cannot grow in areas with high soil salt content. To begin cultivating sugar palms, it is important to pay attention to seedling quality, as the waiting period for production is quite long. For small-scale cultivation, it is recommended to plant local aren palms and purchase seedlings for greater economic value. For large-scale cultivation, over 1 hectare, it is recommended to plant Dwarf Aren Palms, sourcing the seedlings yourself or collaborating with a nursery center.
