Riding Amtrak California's Pacific Surfliner train 774 from its starting point in San Luis Obispo to its final destination in San Diego (November 26, 2021) The Pacific Surfliner serves southern California and is operated with the support of the State of California. Until 1999, it was called the San Diegans. However, as the number of trains serving northern Los Angeles increased, a name that symbolized only San Diego became inappropriate, so the train was renamed "Pacific Surfliner," reflecting the Pacific coastline. The Pacific Ocean can be seen from the train window on the Guadalupe - Goleta, Santa Barbara - Ventura, and San Juan Capistrano - San Diego sections. The most frequent service is between San Diego and Los Angeles at the southern end, with 11 round trips per day on weekdays (12 on Fridays), five round trips between Los Angeles and Goleta, and two round trips between Goleta and San Luis Obispo at the northern end of the line. Trains consist of a single locomotive at the front, double-decker business class cars and coach cars, and a cafe car selling drinks and snacks. In recent years, to increase capacity, trains have sometimes added long-distance double-decker Superliner cars or single-level Amfleet or Horizon passenger cars. Because this train operates using a push-pull system, when it arrives at its terminus, it turns around with the passenger cars at the front without changing locomotives or reversing the direction of the train. Furthermore, since Los Angeles Station is a dead-end terminal, through trains change direction at this station. Amtrak train numbers generally use odd numbers for southbound trains and even numbers for northbound trains, but the Pacific Surfliner is an exception, with odd numbers for northbound trains and even numbers for southbound trains. This is because it has inherited the system from the freight railroad that previously owned the line (Santa Fe Railway, Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway - ATSF).
