The feature was broadcast on Monday Roadshow on TBS on July 4, 1983. The film is an adaptation of an Agatha Christie Miss Marple mystery. The original novel was titled THE MIRROR CRACK’D FROM SIDE TO SIDE. In Japan, it was published by Hayakawa under the title 鏡は横にひび割れて, meaning “The Mirror Cracked from Side to Side.” “CRACK’D” is an old poetic form of “CRACKED.” The title comes from a line in Alfred, Lord Tennyson’s poem “The Lady of Shalott”: “The mirror crack’d from side to side.” The Japanese title of the novel retained this literary origin, but the film was released in Japan under the very different title クリスタル殺人事件, or “The Crystal Murder Case.” By the late 1970s, MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS and DEATH ON THE NILE had made all-star Agatha Christie films popular in Japan. Within that tradition, the literary title 鏡は横にひび割れて was replaced by one that immediately suggested: Agatha Christie an all-star cast and another “Murder Case” Why the mirror became “crystal” remains a mystery. However, the title clearly connected the film with DEATH ON THE NILE and the image of a glamorous large-scale mystery. The cast includes Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson, Tony Curtis, Kim Novak, and Geraldine Chaplin. When the film was first released in Japan, I expected another major mystery in the tradition of DEATH ON THE NILE. The film itself, however, felt much more confined and static. Since this is a Miss Marple story built around a limited circle of suspects, that is only natural. Even so, I felt a gap between the scale suggested by the title and cast, and the intimate nature of the film. In 1983, television listings, newspaper advertisements, narration, and on-screen captions repackaged older films as entertainment to be watched that particular week. A novel titled 鏡は横にひび割れて became the film クリスタル殺人事件 and reached Japanese homes as the next attraction on Monday Roadshow. This promo preserves not only the film’s promotion, but also a glimpse of the way foreign cinema was renamed and reconstructed as Japanese television entertainment.
