Cleopatra | Biografia
Cleopatra VII Philopator, the last queen of Hellenistic Egypt, is perhaps the most famous woman of all antiquity. But behind the myth of the fatal seductress lies a far more complex and fascinating figure: a highly cultured ruler, able to speak eight languages, an expert in diplomacy, economics, and science, heir to a Greek dynasty that ruled the land of the pharaohs for nearly three hundred years. In this documentary, we retrace her extraordinary story in its entirety. From the origins of the Ptolemaic dynasty and the legacy of Alexander the Great, to the splendor of Alexandria, the most refined city of the ancient world, with its legendary lighthouse and its famous Library. We follow the young Cleopatra through the deadly intrigues of the court, her exile and return to power, her famous encounter with Julius Caesar, her scandalous sojourn in Rome, her overwhelming passion with Mark Antony, and the lavish life of the Union of the Inimitable. We then recount the challenge to Rome with the Donations of Alexandria, the disastrous Battle of Actium, and the tragic end of the two lovers, culminating in the birth of a myth that has spanned two thousand years of history, from Renaissance art to contemporary cinema. A thoughtful and well-documented journey through history, politics, and legend, to rediscover the real woman beyond the image the centuries have constructed around her.
