Often overshadowed by the reputation of food from neighbouring Thailand and Vietnam, Cambodia’s cuisine also has a range of delicious dishes. Cambodians use more herbs and less spices than other Southeast Asian countries, but they will often include chopped chillies and garlic in alot of their dishes. Fish Amok is generally known as Cambodia’s signature dish and this creamy curry can be found virtually everywhere in Cambodia. The main ingredient is fillets of freshwater fish, which is diced and covered with coconut milk, eggs, fish sauce and palm sugar. Kroeung and other ingredients, such as turmeric, kaffir lime, lemongrass and shallots are added for flavour. The traditional way to cook the dish is to steam it in a banana leaf. 2. Chicken and banana flower salad. The perfect dish for a steamy Cambodian day, this refreshing dish is rich in flavour. It has tender chicken breast mixed with crunchy banana blossom flower, fried shallots, garlic, chillies and lemongrass, with fresh lime squeezed on top. This meal has a crisp, clean and fresh taste. 3. Kuy Teav. Another popular street food to start your day is Kuy Teav or a Cambodian noodle soup. It's main ingredients are made from pork or beef bones and rice vermicelli. The flavoursome broth is topped with fried shallots and garlic, bean sprouts, green onions and aromatic herbs. Pork or fish balls are added, although some varieties can be with beef. Chilli paste, half a lime and hoisin sauce are usually added on top. 4. Beef Loc Lac. Another tasty dish which is common in Cambodia is Beef Loc Lac. Loc Lac is a Cambodian salad. In this dish, stir-fried strips of tender beef sit on top of crisp lettuce leaves, sliced tomatoes and cucumbers with rings of raw onions. It goes really well served with a fried egg on top. What really makes this dish delicious is the dipping sauce of lime juice and pepper. 5. Prahok. Prohok is an acquired taste when it's served as a main course with rice and even as a side salad, Prahok is a staple to any Cambodian dish. The crushed, salted and fermented fish paste is used as a seasoning, adding to the strong salty flavour. Its pungent odour has a smell that is known as Cambodian cheese. 6. Khmer Curry. While recipes can vary, along with the spice, a Khmer curry is generally mild and mellow, with an almost sweet after taste. It's usually served with chicken, coconut cream, milk, fish sauce, herbs and diced sweet potatoes. You can add garlic, shallots, turmeric, ginger and the very tasty broth can be served with either rice or a baguette. 7. Pork and Rice. Bai sach chrouk is what it's called and it is Cambodia’s national breakfast dish. It's generally only available in the mornings, with the ingredients being thinly sliced pork, marinated in garlic and oil before being slowly barbecued on a warm grill. It's served with rice, sliced cucumbers and pickled vegetables. 8. Lort Cha. This dish gets its name from the short fat noodles that are its main feature. The noodles are stir-fried with beef, broccoli, beansprouts, herbs, and sprinkled with fish and soy sauce. A fried egg is placed on top, with a dash of sweet chilli sauce. You will find this dish in street carts throughout Cambodia. 9.Nom Banh Chok. Easily found throughout Cambodia, this dish of nom banh chok is made of thin rice noodles, shredded banana leaves, beansprouts, cucumber, mint and basil, topped with green fish curry. It is usually sold by woman walking around balancing a pole on her shoulders containing the ingredients on either side. 10. Green mango salad. Full of flavour and colour, this is another dish that really packs a punch. Crunchy and refreshing, it has fresh chilli, fish sauce, sliced green mango, sliced tomatoes and shallots, pickled cucumber, onion, peppers and fresh basil or mint.
