One such match was the one-on-one bout between Akira Maeda and Andre the Giant, held at Tsu City Gymnasium in Mie Prefecture on April 29, 1986. At the time, Maeda was a young ace of UWF, competing in New Japan, and Andre was the top foreign wrestler. Apparently, an uneasy atmosphere hung over this big singles match between the two. A reporter came into the waiting room and asked Maeda, "Andre said he was going to kill Maeda. Is that okay?" Maeda laughed and replied, "In pro wrestling, you don't just say 'I'm going to kill you,' and then kill someone. You don't just say 'I'm going to turn it into a bloodbath!' and then it doesn't turn into a bloodbath." Then Mr. Takahashi, the New Japan referee who arranged the match, came over to Maeda and said, "Andre says you're insolent. Come and say hello." Maeda, accompanied by Takahashi, entered the foreign wrestling waiting room, where Dick Murdoch and others were playing poker. Andre, ignoring Maeda's approach, was drinking beer and laying out his cards. Maeda smiled and held out his hand, asking, "How are you, Andre?" Andre spat out a single word: "Get away!" Thinking that Takahashi was playing a prank on him again, Maeda returned to the waiting room.
