Hop Picking - Tibbs Farm - Udimore - East Sussex - September 2021

Gone are the days of the visiting hop pickers, many of whom would treat the month of September each year as their holiday in the country, away from the noise an pollution of the big towns. Hundreds of pickers and their families would sit around huge bins made of jute sacking. Picking each hop, and woe betide any bins with too many leaves, when it came to bushelling up to measure their days work. Now the hop bines are ripped from the wires and fed into a large machine which strip the hops from the bines. The work of many hundred is now completed in half the time by just a handful of workers, all of whom in this video, have other all year round jobs on the farm.
