Endspiel 5: Springerendspiel

Welcome to the fifth part of the endgame series, Knight Endgame! Note on 5:40: One could also consider the move c4, but I'd like to briefly explain why the move Ne2 is better: The move c4 was also my first instinct (precisely because it keeps the bishop away from the c4 square, but ultimately, that's not actually so crucial in this position). Objectively, c4 is indeed a very good move, but it's only the second-best move in this position. Ne2 is stronger, and I'd like to explain why: After c4, unfortunately, there's no longer the option to play c3, which is crucial many moves later to force a pawn exchange with a pawn breakthrough and transition into a winning position. After c4, White would still be better, but it would be very difficult to win from there, assuming Black plays flawlessly. There's a risk that the position after c4 becomes so entrenched that even White can no longer exploit a sufficient advantage to win. Therefore, after further consideration, Se2 is stronger, and the winning chances remain highest with this move; more precisely, White should be able to force a win from this position with optimal play. ...
